Time to Apply for Uni for 2017

Year 12 students and senior teachers must roll their eyes at the TISC site.

The information is perfect but the site Pokemondesign could do with a few Pokemon GO characters to liven it up.

Applying for Uni online through the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) saves you the trouble of applying to each WA university one at a time.*

You can apply for up to 6 courses.

  • TISC ranks your application according to your ATAR
  • It then coordinates offers in accordance with your first preference as a first step.
  • Choose your first preference carefully as most courses have more applicants than places.
  • All of your preferences are considered in turn until you can be made an offer.
  • You only receive one offer via the TISC process.

Pokemon 2If you are having trouble with anything on the TISC site ring them. I have always found them to be helpful.

Their number is (08) 9318 8000 or email them via info@tisc.edu.au.

If you have a question for a particular university you need to ring their admissions centre directly.

Applications for 2017 university places are open from now until 26 September.

After that date you can still make changes but you need to pay a late fee. Conditions relating to late changes are available on the TISC Calendar.

*You need to apply directly to Notre Dame University or for a place at WAAPA.

Scholarships for School Leavers

With the massive cost increases of many courses you need to find all of the financial support available so that you don’t end uni with a massive debt.

I found these unusual ones:

Most scholarships can be found in the Good Universities Guide.

Apply in Year 12

Many scholarships need to be applied for during year 12.

The closing dates vary depending on the scholarship but many close in August or September.

Some scholarships require a personal statement and references which may take some time to compile.

Jobs for the Future

Mud Jeans leases jeans. When they are returned they are resold as vintage jeans with the story of the adventures they have had so far. When they are no longer useful as jeans the cotton is recycled as yarn that is woven into sweaters.

Bert van Son from Mud Jeans is in Australia using his knowledge of the circular economy to advise Australia Post how to redesign uniforms with the final destination of the uniform materials in mind.

He argues that Generation Y is no longer satisfied with built in obsolescence.

The circular economy movement is about sustainable development and reusing, repurposing and redesigning products with recycling as a final step.

WA is becoming a leader in this as we move  from the resources boom to creating jobs in a sustainable economy.

In June we were the only state to host one of the world’s Open Source Circular Economy events, we can’t keep up with the demand for Coderdojos  and groups like enkel  are bringing together changemakers, from school students to grandmothers, who are experimenting with new approaches to designing and creating for the future.

If you are in WA and would like to start learning about Redesigning Futures contact me and I will try to match you with a mentor, group or workshop to kick start your journey.
