Covid-19 Year 12 Career Development Toolkit

At the UWA careers advisors breakfast on Friday the room was buzzing with talk about how to cope with the Covid-19 virus.

Teachers from wealthy schools were talking about streaming lessons. Teachers from poorer schools were concerned that many of their students don’t have computers and the internet at home.

I have written to the WA Local Government Association asking them to consider student access to library facilities as part of their planning.

I have also written to the Minister for Local Government alerting him to the fact that many senior students may not have access to the internet at home and asking him to consider what his department can do.

School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE)

Our School of Isolated and Distance Education is expert at teaching remotely. I have written to them asking if they have anything to offer that will relieve the stress. I will post any news that they send to me.

Student Edge

Julie Govorko from Canning Vale sent me through information about Student Edge which offers online courses that align with curriculum.

I checked their site and it has an endorsement from Duncraig and Manjimup and both of those subscribe to my newsletter…. so they must be good references!!

All of their courses cost but the prices seem pretty reasonable and they may just be a great tool to help you through the crisis.

I got in touch with them and they suggested that I check out their courses HERE.

Minister for Youth

I wrote to Dave Kelly. Minister for Youth (and some other stuff). His office sent through these links. You could add them to your Covid-19 toolkit to help kids to get through this.

Request for Ideas

I think 90% of year 12s are still hoping for that flash of inspiration which will lead them to their perfect life path for next year.

The chances of that happening are always slim.

I would like to collate any support that you discover and share the ideas so that others can benefit from your knowledge.

I went to uni because my girlfriend was going to uni. I had no idea. I struggled through my degree. I struggled to avoid teaching. I struggled to find my way in the world beyond school. After washing cars and working in bars I went into marketing and then became an English teacher. It didn't stop there. I went into TAFE, then into HR, then into designing training programs for industry before going into system design and IT. At one stage I became a world expert on collaboration frameworks!! Now I am an expert in career paths from school in Western Australia. You can tap into my expertise by subscribing to my newsletter for West Australian high schools or by working with me online as we design your perfect next step.
